I am so glad to have revisited you and your music and wit. I am an on air announcer at KMHD.FM our Portland Oregon jazz station. I assure you that I will play lots of you. And I understand, since he has appeared on some of your recordings, that we have Roger Kellaway in common. He lives in Ojai Ca. and he and his wife Jorjana are very close friends with my former wife. I am a great fan of yours and I shall champion your cause.

Hi ...
I just wanted to tell you that I sort of just "discovered" you, because I was writing a blog for our website about the present financial crisis and titled it "It´s Tulips all over again ...".
And while I was fishing around for background material, I found your brilliant tulip song and had such a good laugh. Wonderful! Simply wonderful!

You, good sir, are an endless font of creativity, as is Carolyn, and we in the radio listening audience shall hold Mr. Reynolds forever in our debt for introducing such gifted artists to us as you two. Thank you for being out there in the world & doing what you're doing. Just incredible. Lookin' forward ta seein' ya in concert!

What a great web site. Funny! The first times I saw Jay was when he accompanied Peggy Lee. As a big fan of Peggy's I'm disappointed to see that there is no picture, no mention, no nothing. What gives? Was she that difficult? Love all the photos still.

Jay, hi from Italy from # 1 Salamander Pie fan. It was given to me as a present years ago and I know each and every lyric and have been listening to it for weeks and months almost with no interruption. Kind of lost track in the last years and then Flight 861 came to me mind during my latest endless intercontinental flight. I was misspelling everything and nothing would come out in the web. I tried and tried and here you are. Glad I found you, again. Ciao. Francesca

I made a mistake in my previous Comment. It's not "Bill" I love, although he is a very swell guy.
It's "Can't Help Lovin' That Man" And who knows - it could be Bill. One more thing - why the photo of New Nexico - or is it Monument Valley? And I love both of them so much.

Got NY Swing this past year and have listened to it more than any other CD. I love that saucy swing. I love the whole album. "Bill" is my favorite song on this album, although ordinarily I do not especially care for it - it's the rhythm that getes me.

Jet Blue Blues
I' m sittin’ on the tarmac
Gonna have a heartattack
Trying hard to get back to you
You know it just isn’t fun
Hanging out at Gate 1
Waitin’, waitin', waitin' to move
I could be workin’ up a sweat
On a beach in Key West
Instead of doing aisle seat Kung Fu
This plane’s stuck in the nest
It failed every test
But was I supposed to do?
It was cheap at the time
to book it on line
And now I'm paying nothing but dues
Can't get these wings in the air
It's like they don't care
If I ever, ever, ever get there—
Turnaround—take me back
Guess I gotta face facts--
I’m never gonna get to Cancun . . .
I got the runway, runaround
Can't get off the ground
Jet blue, motorpool Blues
I said the runway, runaround
Can’t get off the ground
I got these Jet Blue—
I am a fool—

Mr. Leonhart,
I am delighted to have found your website.
Salamander Pie has been my christmas mainstay for more than fifteen years.
I acquired a copy of it, quite by accident, in 1989, when I bought my first CD player, before leaving Winnipeg for university in Montreal. Your album was the disc the electronics store used to demonstrate the different machines, and when I bought the last of my model of choice, they inadvertently left your disc inside.
I didn’t realize that it was there until I’d unpacked the machine a month later, and, haing no other discs to play, listened to it as I set up my dorm.
The lyrics were so depressing, and the music so buoyant, I loved the entire album, and imagined you had probably taken your own life.
Several years later, when I was very sick, I played Salamander Pie for my roommate, and I suspect the laughter (especially for Uncle Jim) which ensued probably helped my lengthy recovery.
I Googled you recently, after introducing the album to a few friends, and was delighted to discover that you’re not dead. A happy discovery.
I’m going to look for your other work, and wish you a happy new year.

When you get tp our age, you have to be satisfied with only being half right. We knew there was a Gallagher and Shean with Bing Crosby, although we thought the partner in the song was Bob Hope. We are pleased to know the other singer was Johnny Mercer; we remember the tune well Brian & Betty Perren
Gammy and Ken
November 26, 2006
If indeed, you really don't know about Gallagher and Shean, here are a few tidbits for you and Mr Gordon: Shean was the uncle of Groucho Marx and Co., wrote some of their material; he and Gallagher didn't like each other much although they performed together on Vaudeville,
and one more thing. Gallagher's wife started Gallagher's Steakhouse. How's that for trivia. Bing Crosby and
Johnny Mercer recorded the song
"Mr Gallagher and Mr. Shean" in the early 40's. Nope. No Hope. Anyway, we love your work and look forward to hearing you both again. We treasure you CD which we bought at
Tribeca Performing Arts Center.
Thank you!

Jay, this is Steve Boisen, the bass player you met at David Gage's last Monday. I just wanted to thank you for being so generous with your time and talent. I really enjoyed your performance that evening at Rothmann's Steakhouse and it was a real treat to sit in and play George Duvivier's bass (which shall henceforth be called Jay Leonhart's bass). I was inspired by your musicianship and words of wisdom and I hope I can hear you play again during my next trip to New York. I'll send you a copy of the CD I recorded at Nola with Nate Najar and Chuck Redd when it's finished and I promise not to ask you if you listened to it or liked it.
Best wishes,

Jay,
Just played the video of Bucky and Howard Alden playing "Snowfall". It is listed as "Snowflake", an easily understood typo. Thornhill's theme is so lovely, especially with 2 guitars, that it shold have the correct title, just in the outside chance that someone doesn't know it.
Enjoy your web site. My wife sends her best too!

Howard Alden and Pucy Pizzerelli are playing "Snowfall", not "Snowflake" as listed in your Music Video section. Just an easily understood typo, still Cluade's theme is so lovely (especially with the two guitars) that it should be correcrly quoted just incase some one tunes in on it and did not know the correct title. Enjoy your site. My wife says hello too!

Stumbled upon your site while seeking a cool bass poem for a musician friend for his birthday (a card and poem suits my budget and his taste).Whatcha got for me? By the way, my young musician son and I thought you were so terribly cool that we had to stop and put on jackets before we continued to peruse your site. We saw "The Bass Lesson" tonight (Saturday, April 15) at the Plush Room in San Francisco. The wit and humor of the songs, some of which we'd heard on KCSM-FM, were enhanced by the cleverness of the show tying the songs together. We loved being at a show with some much family by-play. We felt a part of it. And we enjoyed chatting with you after the show. We look forward to seeing you again.

I'm a big Steely Dan fan, and I have enjoyed the work your kids have been doing with them. What a wonderful thing is a musical family! Eveyone in my dad's family has a bit of a musical gift, but most of us just use it for fun. I have to say, though, having a good ear makes it very hard to walk through the room while my husband is watching "American Idol!"
I write letters to the Times all the time that I don't send, too...although they did publish one of mine once, and in the magazine. It was about Bette Midler, who I adore. Nice to meet you, Penny Kohn

Just heard your interview with Melanie on KCSM and thought I'd check out your web site. You and John Clayton seem to be two of the few who bow German style. Nothing wrong with it, just a comment. Great site. Love the photos.

You would think if I'd heard it thousands of times, I'd have gotten it RIGHT! Please pardon.
JL: "And now we're rolling, Nancy."
NL: "Okay, Jay!"
Geez.
Thanks again for the music. GM

I truly, TRULY landed here by accident since I came to the computer to find out who wrote the lyrics to "Do You Miss New York?" from Rosie's wonderful CD, (I found it -- Dave Frishberg, and what swell lyrics they are...), BUT your site is just beguiling. And I thought I'd take a moment to tell you, Jay, that if I have heard, "Ready, Nancy? Okay, Jay!" once, I've heard that and loved that thousands of times. That and all the work you did with Nancy was special, precious and unforgettable. Thank you for the joy it continues to bring to me and so many others.

Dear Jay,
I was surfing the net and looked you up. We met at the Fort Orange Club in February, when you and Joh played with Bucky. My wife Marcia sat on your left at dinner. She really enjoyed the music and chat, which delights me because she was raised on a "Sweet Band" diet. Have got her to enjoy small groups now i.e. John Pizzeralli, Marian Mc P. Now she is a fan of you, Bucky and John!
I too was thrilled with the evening, being a jazz and big band buff and player during my younger days, as I believed I told you. Now am playing with 80 piece De,mar Community Orchestra. Serious Classical stuff, plus "pops". We are doing my arrangement of "The Unforgettable Nat 'King' Cole" in a series of concerts at retirment and skilled care homes plus the town hall here in town.
Just wanted to say hello, am in process of chewcking out your CD's, and will purchase same soon.
Regards,
Art Wendth

Liked your piece on free range chickens. Not only are they bred in decent surroundings, but they taste so much better than the factory- reared
'plastic' birds.Free range pork is very popular here.

Hi this is me writing in my own guestbook. Is this pathetic? But sometimes this is the only way I can get in touch with myself.
No, really, I suspect that a few of my guests are writing when they are pleasantly stoned, or else just feeling hopelessly creative and somewhat disoriented. Not all of you mind you, but just one of you down below who's tome wanders like a Charles Bukowski novel. No one has yet bothered to express him or herself so thoroughly in my guestbook, so I will leave the message on for eternity or until a sunspot wipes out the web and we must resort to letters again.

Heard you on Jazz fm a few times and just love your songs, especially the Louis Bellson one... As I spent a few years in Montreal as a drummer and played lots of Italian weddings I can empathize...
I run a small cabinet shop just east of Toronto and I make my guys listen to jazz all day long and when your stuff ocmes on I shut down the saws and crank up the radio and just absorb...
Keep it up...

Wow! It’s Jay Leonhart! I saw you in concert. Actually, it was at Soundsations Jazz Camp last summer. Your performance was so awesome! I have to admit that when I heard we would be watching a soloist bassist all night, I wasn't too thrilled. I love the bass, but I didn't understand how a bassist could have is own show. On top of that, I was excepting typical "playin’ it cool" jazz music (don’t get me wrong, I love that too), But then you came and blew us all away with your performance. It was so funny! It was spectacular and I was amazed.
Stay cool! PEACE

Hi Jay!
I've been a bass player for a long time, and a non bass player for even more time.
Over the past few years my kids have become good musicians in their own right, so I've taken up the bass again after 20 years.
I've turned my son (the drummer) and my daugher (the pianist) on to jazz and we love your work. I got your song Bluebird on a CD in Bassist Magazine, and we want to learn it but can't find any sheet music or books. Are any available?
And thanks for inspiring me to get another upright and play.

I cannot begin to tell you
what it means to have found you, your music, writings & poems
Aha!
before i have even met you --
which was the point at idly
googling your name in a fast minute
i had leftover from the usual spam email-deleting...
(and the worst thing is
there's no more room, if i detect the seeming meaning of the moving cursor in this 'comment' section)
i'm going off to a 'work-work' meeting, which is where i make some money...
(to support my jazz habit)
which, when i'm gigging for less money, (as the expression doesn't go)
I do this for my health!!
after all, as a senior still on the circuit, it takes gumption and moolaa, eh? LOVED YOUR LES PAUL comment.
But Mainly to pay for my players, altho my drummer-husband, maintaining the salacious and salubrious relationship that we've had lo these many years, brings his kit out(jazz kit--it's small :-) ) and plays for free --- the most supportive move, I might add, and thereby saving me paying the band more than i'm paid. More's the pity, but look to the rainbow, & we keep giggin'....
because we love the music
all kinds of music
there's nary a strain to be played coming from true & pure
that i wouldn't yearn to hear
and is ultimately my cure
however, one more thing b4I go ***
it was December '77
Our own li'l honeyed heaven
as my drummer lover and i trundeled on down Baja way to the last lick of land & blue water
from a li'l less than gorgeous LA
listening to Steely Dan for 1000 miles ...
never really recovered from that
never knew i'd be wanting to talk to a Jay, father of Michael & Carolyn, grandpa to Normyn
(a name I honor as I spent time with Norman Corwin doing one of his plays)
Ah, but who knows Norman?
now i do know another Normyn
i'm late, i'm late
gotta clean up my mess
but i'll be back
had too many out-loud laughs
reading your mind..... fun!!!
AND the whole reason for googling you was a friend who i meant in passing yesterday (and whose 20th anniversary i sang at yrs ago)
started to really hear jazz.... as she visited her review-writing friend in New Orleans last week. What an education & romp she had....I shared with her my husband's (www.davegetz.com or www. bbhc.com)and my experience looking for 'our kind of jazz' last June on my 1st visit to that fabulous town. We found it too --- of course, we found everything else too..... but we'll never, ever get over our Steely Dan trip -- it is the music that binds us (i'm sure he had every CD)....
and I sing 'Aja' along with new & old jazz standards.... only those who know really get the kick!
Anyway, after that trip--
life resumed
we had a child 10yrs later
played SD for her on cartrips
Now she's at UCLA, a hipster
hip-hopper & recording first songs
tho we never dreamed she'd be a nurse, it's rewarding ****
nice to see it come home
I must have seen Carolyn in SD tour at the Shoreline out here in SF --2000- we had box seats but found it more comfortable(?!) to look at the monitors ---- yikes!
--- the band with Donald out front on keyboards were teensy, weensy people on the stage.....
and yes, the music was fine
not quiet as good as in my car
Ciao & thanks in advance
(if you got this far in reading)!

Recently at the Manly Jazz Festival I met and spent some great time with Peter Ind and his wife. Enjoyed reading (and owning) his new book, 'Jazz Visions' - about the Lennie Tristano experience.
He spoke well of you and recommended that I get some of your recordings. Which I hope to do soon....with your help.

Here's my review of Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love
Monday, January 18 marked the opening night at Au Bar in New York City of "Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love", a funny, happy, and lively off Broadway musical review of the songs Elvis performed and recorded. Attended this night by an already enthusiastic audience, Hunka Hunka started off stating clearly that there would be no Elvis impersonating, even as the cast morphed into three Elvis poses, the last such in the show. For some this was a tragedy of immense proportions. For others it was a relief and a blessing. Hunka Hunka instead features three talented young New York actor/singers who delivered ninety minutes of non-stop Elvis treasures, semi-treasures, mixed in with a few obligatory servings of movie fluff and teenie trash. The performers, Emily Drennan, Tom LoSchiavo, and Andy Karl enthusiastically delivered their individual talents to the audience, with Karl being the most seasoned and humorous, the attractive Drennan really knowing how to deliver a song, and the charming LoSchiavo possessing a sweet voice. Together, a very winning trio.
Hunka Hunka's versions of "Don't Be Cruel" and "In The Ghetto" were truly moving, and Andy Karl's brilliant scratchy record version of "Return to Sender" was very, very funny.
The band was hot and Ted Firth's up to date arrangements gave many of these old chestnuts a nice lift and a new life.
The show is still a work-in-progess and seems to need more space for Elvis stories in the script, but I'm assured that they are coming. There are a few musical selections that could be replaced with poignant Elvis stories.
If you need an Elvis impersonator, go to Vegas. If you want to hear all of Elvis's hits in a fast paced and very likable show, see Hunka Hunka Burnin' Love.

Now for more than 20 years Jay is my favoured jazz musician. I think it started with a couple of songs on Salamander Pie. I invested a lot of money in my "friendship" with Jay. I bought a very expensive cd player, tube amps and speakers to hear and to feel the real Jay. While reading CD covers I noticed that Jay was performing on Pop recordings (Garland Jeffreys, ...) or in the Glenn Miller Big Band. Absolutely GREAT! In these years is was not so easy to find Jay´s CDs in Germany, but I think I have got them all. Some of the CDs I bought in Japan! Within these years I was impressed about the different versions of his music (example: The double cross). Each time the music is brillant, but different. And I started to dream my dream: Once I will see Jay singing and playing the bass, maybe in New York! Next week I am on a business trip. On 4th of March I have a stopover in New York City. And I have checked Jay´s calendar. I think there is something wrong with the calendar, there is no entry (no show) on Saturday, March 4. But once I will have the chance to hear and to see the real Jay!
